Education and
Training
Education and training are major parts of the mission
here at the Center. Individuals seeking use of instrumentation in
the facility must be trained and certified by the Center personnel.
Training procedures (via (I) UCI official courses, (II) short course,
or (III) individual training) are depend upon a user's choice of
instrumentation, and previous knowledge and experience. The Center
encourages users and studnets to enroll in official course that
provide in depth instruction and training, however, short courses
are also an excellent opportunity for review available to experienced
users.
(I)
UCI Official Courses
The Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials
Science offers official electron microscopy courses (TEM and SEM)
throughtout the academic year. In addition, the Center also offers
three-day SEM short course in the summer or when needed. For those
who has some experiences operating electron microscopes or for those
with urgent needs, the individual training can be arranged. The
official courses listed in UCI catalogue are:
CBEMS 164 - MSE 264 Scanning Electron Microscopy
(3)
A comprehensive introduction to the field of scanning
electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray microanalysis, including basic
design and electron optics of a SEM, electron beam - specimen interaction,
image formation and interpretation, and X-ray microanalysis. The
course emphasizes the practical aspects of the techniques described,
and designed for graduate and senior students in all aspects of
sciences and engineering.
Lecture: 2 hours/week
Laboratory: 2-3 hours/week
MSE 259 Transmission Electron Microscopy (4)
An introduction to transmission electron microscopy
(TEM), including electron diffraction and reciprocal space, formation
of image and image contrast, interpretation of images and electron
diffraction information, introduction of microanalysis, flexibly
designed for graduate and senior students in all aspects of science
and engineering. Heavy emphasis on laboratory practice, including
TEM operation and specimen preparation.
Lecture: 3 hours/week
Laboratory: 2-3 hrs. TEM operation and 2 hrs. specimen preparation
per week
MSE 210 Materials Characterization Techniques and
Analysis (3)
Introduction to microcharacterization techniques,
and their application to the study of bulk and thin-film materials;
methods of analysis, including electron beam-induced excitations
(SEM, SAM, EDX, STEM), x-ray and photon-induced interactions
(PEX, ESCA), ion processes (RSB, SIMS, PIXE), submicron optical
techniques, and electromagnetic field-induced methods (STM, AFS).
Prerequisites: Chemistry 1A-B-C, Physics 7A, 7LA.
CBEMS 160 Synthesis and Characterization of Materials
(4)
Synthesis of metal alloys, ceramics, and polymers.
Basic physical principles and applications of analytical techniques
for characterizing materials, including x-ray diffraction, thermal
analysis. scanning electron microscopy. Prerequisite: ENGR54.
Only one course from CBEMS160, CBEMS180, and Chemistry 156 may be
taken for credit. Formerly MSE159. (Design units: 0).
Lecture: 2 hours/week
Laboratory: 6 hours operation/week
CHE 156 Advanced Laboratory in Chemistry and Synthesis
of Materials (4)
Synthesis and characterization of organic and inorganic
materials including polymers, oxides, metal alloys, electronic materials.
Techniques include electron microscopy, solid-state NMR,
gel permeation chromatography , photolithography , x-ray diffraction,
porosity, and thermal analysis. Prerequisite: Chemistry 130A-B or
131A-B or Engineering E54. Same as Engineering CBEMS180. Chemistry
156 and Engineering CBEMS 160 may not both be taken for credit.
Lecture: 2 hours/week
Laboratory: 8 hours operation/week
(II)
Short Courses
The Center has taught summer SEM Short Course every
summer since 2001, and also TEM Short Course occasionally (summer
of 2001 and 2003).
(III)
Individual Training
For those who has urgent need or have experience but
require brief training, the Center provides one on one training
class. Users requesting for individual training must contact the
Facility personnel for training sessions.
All
new users are need to be trained unless he/she had and passed the
courses (such as CBEMS 164, CBEMS 180, MSE 210, MSE 259, MSE 264)
from UCI. Please contact the Center personnel or the Director for
a training session.
