- 11/21/05 Digital imaging system in TEM
The Center has recently installed a new CCD camera on our FEI/Philips
CM-20 TEM. This new CCD camera is part of a collaborative effort with
Gatan, Inc. in testing the newer model of the CCD camera and digital imaging
system. This new camera has shown to be a great improvement upon its predecessor;
it has excellent capabilities in imaging and range, and the software (digital
imaging) runs on a very user friendly program. This new system has the
potential to simplify high-resolution work - much time can be saved by
foregoing the hassle of developing films and printing photos.
We will have three months (or hopefully longer) to try out this special
camera, I encourage all of you to seize the opportunity to take advantage
of using this camera. While we are testing this new imaging system, we
would also like to ask you to fill out a survey form each time after using
the digital imaging system. The survey log-in book will be placed in the
TEM room. Please write down any difficulties or problems you encounter
in capturing your images, as well as any comments and suggestions in the
survey book. Gatan will incorporate our comments and suggestions in their
manufacture of the new product.
Meanwhile you still have the option to use the conventional Kodak films
to record your image if you prefer to do so.
In addition, the EDS detector has been rebuilt and re-installed on the
CM-20 TEM. It is essentially a new EDS detector with a very good resolution
of 131ev. With the new CCD camera/digital imaging system and EDS detector,
our current TEM is very well equipped. I sincerely hope youwill find this
powerful instrumentation useful to your research.
- 09/30/05 Letter from the Director
Dear MC2 Friends:
Summer is over and I hope you all had a relaxing season. As we are entering
the new Fall Quarter of 2005, I would like to take the opportunity to
share with you some exciting news from the Materials Characterization
Center.

I would like to congratulate Mr. Mason Dean (Department of Ecology
& Evolutionary Biology). Mason was one of ten recipients of the
prestigious Presidential Award at the Microscopy Society of America
(MSA) annual conference that was held in Honolulu, Hawaii (July 31
- August 4, 2005). The title of this paper was "Morphology and
Ultrastructure of Prismatic Calcified Cartilage." The co-authors
of this paper are Wen-An Chiou (Department of Chemical Engineering
and Materials Science) and Adam P. Summers (Department of Ecology
and Evolutionary Biology).
It brings me great pleasure and pride to see one of our students
receive this very competitive and honorable award. MSA distinguishes
only 10 student papers per year at the meeting. Furthermore, this
is our third consecutive year that UCI students have received awards
from the MSA. The MSA annual meeting gathers more than 2000 world-wide
attendants/microscopists to present most current research findings
in the field.

We have finally completed the on-line reservation and computer log-in
and log-out system for our major instruments (SEM, TEM and XRD). Starting
October 1, 2005 we will implement this system in our facility. We
ask that all users please comply with the facility rules and regulations
for the most efficient utilization. You can find the regulations on
our website at http://www.mc2.eng.uci.edu.
Thank you very much for your attention. Please feel free to get in
touch with me should you have any questions. As always, I also appreciate
any comments and/or suggestions regarding our facilities.
Best regards,
Wen-An Chiou
- 09/30/05 Online Reservations in effect as of October 1, 2005
We have finally completed the design and testing of the on-line reservation
system. The on-line reservation will be implemented on October 1, 200
Awards
The Center would like to recognize the insightful research that has been
conducted and presented at notable meetings throughout the year.
Congratulations to the following researchers:
-
Mason Dean (Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology),
Wen-An Chiou (Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science),
Stanislay Gorb (Max Planck Institute fur Metalforschung, Department
Arzt, Heisenbergstrasse, Stuttgart, Germany) and Adam Summers (Department

Biological Science, at the 16th International Microscopy Congress.
In addition, Mason Dean also won the IMC 16/IFSM Scholarship for Young
Scientists, a financial support for young participants to attend the
meeting.
The title of the paper was "Ontogeny of Calcification of the
Tessellated Skeleton". It was one of the 12 recipients of the
honorable Poster Award (selected from a total of more than 1300 posters)

Sapporo, Japan, September 3-8, 2006. The meeting had a record setting
attendance of more than 2,000 participants from 63 countries. The
Japanese Emperor gave an address at the Congress Ceremony on the birthday
(09/06/06) of their grandson, the Royal prince.
